One of my dearest friends growing up had Down syndrome. Watching her grow up in a world that didn't always seem to understand her, I developed an immense sensitivity to people who have diagnoses that affect their lives in different ways.
Perhaps my own experiences as a closeted gay man for the first twenty-one years of my life caused me to understand, to some degree, the level of difficulty in being "different" in a world that expects so much of people. I am certain that my life experiences and education positions me to work with diverse people helping them navigate life's challenges and coming out on the other side with hope and health.
I graduated from Oakes High School in 2008 - Home of the Tornadoes! Admittedly, I didn't think of myself as a good student not because I didn't try hard but education just didn't seem like it came easy to me in the way it did for others. Admittedly, I didn't think of myself as a good student not because I didn't try hard but education just didn't seem like it came easy to me in the way it did for others. Perhaps this was a matter of perspective but it gave me a complex at some point in my life that encouraged me to work even harder in the areas I was passionate about- helping people.
I attended the University of North Dakota and graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice Studies in 2012. In 2017, after having started a career in the juvenile justice field, I went back to graduate school in an effort to advance my education to better position myself to help people with the issues they faced. I graduated with my Master's Degree in Social Work in 2020 and began the journey to become a board certified, licensed clinical social worker which I completed in January of 2025.
I've had the privilege of working in a number of clinical settings along the way- community mental health, crisis residential treatment, and outpatient psychotherapy. I've worked with multidisciplinary teams including consultation with medical doctors, nurses, psychologists, teachers and administrators, psychiatrists, and state and federal probation officers. I've supported individuals of all ages with diagnoses including mood disorders, personality disorders, schizophrenia, substance use disorders, and post-traumatic stress disorder.
My deepest passion at this juncture of life involves anything relating to physical activity. In June 2022, I competed in a Half Ironman in Couer d'Alene, Idaho. My deepest passion at this juncture of life involves anything relating to physical activity. In June 2022, I competed in a Half Ironman in Couer d'Alene, Idaho. In July 2024, I competed in the Maah Daah Hey Marathon. To date, these are my two greatest physical accomplishments I've completed. When asked what my goals are relating to race times, I always respond, "to finish," as that's not always guarenteed, despite the amount of training a person does.
In fact, life is a bit like training- your goal is always to cross the finish line, but the journey is unpredictable. You might face unexpected challenges like injuries, setbacks, snakes, or other obstacles beyond your control. Despite your best efforts and preparation, success isn't always guarenteed. However, what truly matters is the dedication, resilience, and growth you experience along the way.
Just like in life, it's not solely about reaching the end, but about showing up, pushing through adversity, and embracing the journey with perseverance and purpose.
